 Term 1

We have a very exciting term ahead of us. To keep up to date with what we are learning have a look at our Very Important Planner (VIP) Term 1.

In Literacy we have been working on learning different phoneme families. We work on a phoneme family for two weeks then we work on different spelling strategies.

We now know the following phoneme families:

  • 'ae' is also written as 'a-e', 'ay', 'ai', 'ey' and 'ea'
  •  'ee' is also written as 'ea', 'e', 'ie' and 'e-e'

We now know the following spelling strategies:

  • Knowledge and use of Phonics - using what we know to help us sound words out
  • Syllabification - breaking words into syllables, for example: (remember = re - mem - ber)
  • Words within Words - Look for words within words, for example: (example = exam - ample)
  • Mnemonic - create a silly sentence to help us remember, for example: enough (Every Naughty Old Unlucky Ghost Haunts)

In maths we have been working on Numbers. We have worked on our understanding of Place Value, the importance of zero to help us hold a place in the Hundreds, Tens and Units columns and we have been using this to help us with our vertical addition. We have been using games and problems to help us to apply our skills in different ways.

Our Learning In Context this term has been Food and Farming.  We have been learning about arable farms, livestock farms and where food comes from.  We were very lucky to visit Stewart Tower Dairy Farm to learn in person about Dairy Farming.

Term 2

This term we are continuing to work hard to improve ourselves by doing our best all the time. To find out what we will be learning this term, please have a look at our Very Important Planner.

In Literacy we have been working on learning different phoneme families. We work on a phoneme family for two weeks then we work on different spelling strategies.

We now know the following phoneme families:

  • 'ie' is also written as 'igh', 'i-e', and 'y'
  • 'oe' is also written as 'o-e', 'oa' and 'ow'

In Big Writing we have been learning to add detail to our writing. First we worked in teams to share all our words for describing characters.

Next we learned to describe a setting, we created and described our very own planet!

Finally we put all our learning together and created an imaginative story about a character discovering our planet.

In Numeracy we have been learning about chance and uncertainty with Mrs Perkins. We have completed experiments to help us find out more about it.

Our Learning In Context has been Space. We have been learning about the Sun, Earth and Moon rotation. We discovered that the Earth is always orbiting the Sun, the Moon is always orbiting Earth and the Earth is always spinning on its axis! What a lot of spinning!

We chose a planet or subject linked to space and we researched it, created an information poster then presented our findings to the class.

 Term 3

In Term 3 we learning to create our own targets to help us improve ourselves. To find out what we have been learning, please have a look at our Very Important Planner.

In Literacy we have been continuing to develop our knowledge of different phoneme families.

We now know the following phoneme families:

  • 'ff' is also written as 'ff', 'ph', and 'f'
  • 'ow' is also written as 'ow' and 'ou'

We have also been learning about different spelling rules. We have learned about the following:

  • Adding 'ed' to make a verb past tense
  • Hard C and Soft C rules
  • Hard G and Soft G rules

In Numeracy we have been learning to tell the time using analogue and digital clocks. We can identify and explain the different features of both the analogue and digital clock. We can tell the time in 12 hour and 24 hour. We also used real bus timetables to explore reading timetables and calculating duration of time.

This term we have also developed our skills using number squares, remembering our multiplication and division facts and learning about fractions.

Our Learning In Context has been Energy, Electricity and Water. We have learned all about the different type of energy, discovered that energy is everywhere and it cannot be destroyed.  We learned all about renewable and non-renewable energy, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both.  We took part in vertical learning groups where we worked in our house groups with pupils from Primary 2 to Primary 4. We worked with different teachers to learn all about electricity, the water cycle and different states of water.

In Music we have been working VERY hard to learn all of our songs for the big performance at the end of term. Mrs Wells is extremely proud of the effort Primary 4 have put into learning the songs and improving their performance through self and  peer feedback.

 Term 4

We have another busy and exciting term ahead of us. To find out what we will be learning, please have a look at our Very Important Planner.
